Menéndez to Force DOJ to Act In Federal Corruption Case
Senator Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) will take action to force the DOJ to decide whether to retry him on corruption charges. If the federal government does not decide whether or not to prosecute him within the next month, Menéndez said his lawyers will force a decision by citing federal speedy trial guidelines. The Senator also told reporters that, should the charges be dropped, he expects to reclaim his post as the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Menéndez gave up the position in 2015 after his indictment. Menéndez said the jurors in his first trial -- which ended in a 10-2 hung jury -- "didn't believe in the theory" of DOJ's case. "They didn't believe in the facts, they had some really harsh words for the government." So, "If [the federal government] want[s] to prosecute, bring it on," he added. Read more here.
