Castro Brothers Could Make History with Their Political Ambitions

The political ambitions of Texas twins Congressman Joaquín Castro (D) and former Obama HUD Secretary Julián Castro are on a parallel track to capitalize on the growing influence of the Latino community in American politics. Earlier this year, The Beat DC reported that Joaquin Castro opted not to challenge Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2018. Why? He’s considering a run for governor. Politico reports that people who’ve spoken with him say he’s mulling over the decision to take on the popular incumbent Governor Greg Abbott who has $40 million in the bank. Reportedly, both DNC Chairman Tom Pérez and Texas’ party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa want the congressman to proceed. Meanwhile, Julián Castro recently launched a PAC and is spending the fall writing an autobiography and has made his interest in a WH run pretty clear. Both brothers are considered longshots by some. But inarguably, they are well-positioned to change the course of politics in these abnormal times. Moreover, in 2007 a young, first-term Illinois Senator was also considered a longshot and went on to make history in the Oval Office. Politico has more.
