Melania Trump Told to Consult Carla Hayden on Children’s Books

A local librarian in Massachusetts not only rejected books donated to her school by First Lady Melania Trump, but she told Trump to consult Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden for recommendations. The First Lady had donated ten books to one school in every state as part of 2017 National Read a Book Day on September 6th. Schools were chosen -- with help from the Department of Education -- for having “high standards of excellence” that have been recognized by state and national awards. In a letter to Trump, Library Media Specialist Liz Phipps Soeiro chided FLOTUS45 for not donating to “underfunded and underprivileged communities that continue to be marginalized and maligned by policies put in place by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos,” and told Trump that “Dr. Seuss is a bit of a cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature ... Just down the street you have access to a phenomenal children’s librarian: Dr. Carla Hayden, the current Librarian of Congress.
