Stephanie Murphy Intros Bipartisan Bill on Vet Homelessness
Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) last week joined with three other members of Congress to introduce a bipartisan bill looking to ensure that the federal government continues its efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans. Murphy, along with Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Congressman Bruce Westerman (R-AR), backed Congresswoman Jacky Rosen’s (D-NV) Keeping Our Commitment to Ending Veteran Homelessness Act. The bill reauthorizes a number of federal programs, including: the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, the Homeless Women Veterans and Homeless Veterans with Children Reintegration Program, the Mental Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program, the Referral and Counseling Services for Certain Veterans at Risk of Homelessness Program, the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program, the Housing Assistance for Homeless Veterans Program, the Grants and Per Diem (GPD) Homeless Veterans with Special Needs Program, and the Advisory Committee on Homeless Veterans Program. “No American—and especially no military veteran—should have to live on the streets,” said Murphy. “On any given night, there are over 40,000 homeless veterans in the United States. Ending veteran homelessness requires serious and sustained efforts. Men and women who wore the uniform have earned our support, especially when they are down on their luck.” The bill has been sent to the House Veterans Affairs Committee. So far, there is no Senate counterpart. More here.
