Menéndez Will Retake Foreign Relations Post But Not All Are Happy
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has reappointed Senator Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) as the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Menéndez had stepped down while he fought off federal corruption charges brought forward by the Justice Department. Now that the charges have been dropped, Menénedez will reclaim his spot atop the Committee. “I am honored to resume my position as Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Now more than ever, it is critical that the United States remains fully engaged across the globe and that we project the principles of our democratic ideals as we confront the emerging threats and demands we face under the Trump Administration,” Menéndez said. However, many progressives are unhappy that the Senator, one of the most conservative Dems when it comes to foreign policy, will be back on the committee. "Senator Menendez has failed to show he has the dedication to a diplomacy-first foreign policy that's urgently needed now in the Democratic Party and Senate as a whole,” said one progressive operative.
