Editorial Assistant (Washington, DC)

The Beat DC is looking for a self-starting Editorial Assistant, based out of our Washington, DC office, to support our daily publication as well as contribute to a wide range of operational activities, including content generation and editing, brand-raising, scheduling, and coordination, database maintenance, management of the technology platform, event planning, and administrative support for the Managing Editor. This is an opportunity for an emerging journalism professional looking for real-world experience in what it takes to produce a high-quality, well-sourced daily tip sheet, and to get it in front of the right sets of eyes. Our successful candidate will have a high degree of initiative, personal resilience, attention to detail, and intellectual engagement in the subject-matter at hand.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Management: Coordinate scheduling and logistics for Managing Editor, respond to inquiries and requests, track timelines and deliverables;

  • Digital Media: contribute to digital media development including the creation and posting of social media content; handle certain website updates; track and analyze digital analytics, and other online duties.

  • Proofread daily tipsheet and help make edits.

  • Find interesting content and help write copy.

  • Assist with art layout of daily tipsheet.

  • Manage FOMO and Blog section of the tipsheet.

  • Event Management: Assist in the planning, coordination, and staffing of a range of convenings -- salons, panel discussions, receptions, parties, etc. -- intended to raise the visibility and brand of The Beat DC. Tasks may include venue logistics, registrations, marketing and outreach, attendee and speaker communications, on-site support, vendor management, etc.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements:

  • A degree in Journalism, or a comparable mix of education and experience. Minimum 1-year direct experience in the production and publication of news publication to include research, writing, copy editing, and verification.

  • Strong written communications skills, with the ability to quickly write for tone and accuracy, are obviously a must!

  • Proven project management skills to handle multiple assignments with many moving parts.

  • Ability to work on Sundays, early mornings, and late evenings.
