CBC Members Aim to Manage Graceful Exit for Conyers, While Chair Says Not His Decision to Make

According to CNN’s Manu Raju, some members of the Congressional Black Caucus are in talks to get Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) to step down amid allegations of sexual misconduct. Earlier this month, Congressman Greg Meeks (D-NY) became the first to call for Conyers’ resignation. According to CNN, CBC members want Conyers to make a graceful exit as three former staffers have come forward accusing the Congressman of mistreating them. A CBC staffer told CNN that "there is a feeling among some of our members that we need to protect his legacy," noting that Conyers is a founding member of the group and was a leading figure in the civil rights movement. However, The Hill reports that CBC Chair Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-LA) will not press Conyers to step down. “That’s a personal decision for him and his family,” Richmond told reporters in the Capitol after votes, before stepping into an elevator. Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) echoed those sentiments saying, "I don’t think we should rush to judgment. It’s his decision to make.” More here.
